Chin recovered quickly enough to make worm surprise for dinner. The others groaned at the name, but Chin just giggled. He’d combined bits of worm meat with egg noodles and a light cream sauce, presenting a large bowl to the group.

“It looks like a bowlful of little worms” Lissa made a face when she saw it.

“Well, technically that’s what it is.” Mejia laughed at his own humor.

“It’s delicious, trust me.” Chin encouraged her. “I mean, if I can eat it after what happened today, so can you.” He held the bowl out to her, and she took it with a timid smile. After scooping some onto her plate and passing the bowl, she took a deep breath and placed a forkful in her mouth.

“Hey, that’s pretty good!” her smile for Chin got brighter.

“Tastes a little like beef stroganoff.” Fletcher observed after her first mouthful.

“Worm stroganoff sounds a lot better than worm surprise.” Lissa added.

“Tastes like chicken.” Graves grinned at Chin, who pretended to look offended.

“Making this dish leveled up my cooking skill.” Chin struck a hero pose, making Graves and Lissa chuckle. The others smiled, except for Volkov, who was staring at his plate, pushing noodles and worm meat around with his fork. “I’m still hoping that at higher levels, my cooking will provide some kind of buffs.”

“Let’s find out.” Fletcher said after swallowing her first bite. “You cook all the meals from now on, and I’ll do the dishes. Also, this is pretty good.” Chin beamed at the compliment, and the room grew quiet as everyone dug in.

When the meal was done, Fletcher had them wait in the cafeteria while Mejia ran to fetch something. He returned with a large box filled with orbs, setting it on the table in front of Fletcher. She grabbed a handful from the box and began tossing one to each of them. “We’ve got a good supply of these, and we might as well use some of them, at least. So each of us gets ten. When everyone had one, she held hers up in the palm of her hand, then focused on absorbing it. Each of them followed suit, then grabbed another, and another, absorbing them one by one until they’d consumed ten orbs each.

“Anybody level up?” Fletcher looked around the table. Everyone shook their head to indicate they had not.

“I’m up to two hundred reputation now.” Lissa volunteered. “One of the orbs I just used was a level two, and it was worth thirty reputation instead of ten, like the others.”

“Yep, I got one of those as well.” Graves confirmed. “So we should definitely let some of those things grow bigger before we kill them. Assuming there are more in there.”

“I will try to think of a way to safely domesticate them.” Volkov spoke quietly, still staring at his full plate. “Maybe in large tanks, big enough to hold several each. We can capture them, put them in the tank, let them eat each other until one big one remains.”

“Seems like sort of a waste, don’t you think?” Chin asked.
